We are the body...

I’ve always known that the Bible calls the church of Christ His body on many accounts. Most of the time, Paul brings this metaphor to our hearts talking about the necessity of union in diversity, calling us to work as one, even if we think “we don’t need an ear or an eye”. (1 Corinthians 12:12-26) I think we can all agree that these things are very true and very necessary to remember as we walk as one body. But here’s the point. I woke up this morning thinking about being a body, literally. I am a body. Well, I’m a soul with a body, but you get my point. I started looking at my hands, I felt my ears, I blinked my eyes. I thought, ‘man, this is intricate.’ As a sociology major, I don’t ponder upon biological matters very often, so just humor me in my baby-like discoveries. I’m not a morning person, and I love lying in bed for a while. I started thinking, if I were to never get out of bed, my body would die. It would shrivel up and be completely useless. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but if a live body decides to never get out of bed, it starts losing muscle mass, losing motor skills, losing strength. It becomes absolutely immobilized. I decided I’d better get out of bed! Then I started thinking about my brothers and sisters in Christ. I started thinking about all of those body parts. And I really understood what it meant to be the body of Christ. And more of what it meant, what it implies and the responsibilities that come with it. The (biological) body is meant to be in movement. It’s meant to burn off energy. It consumes, but it is designed to ‘get rid of things’. The same thing happens in the dynamic of ‘church’. As the body of Christ, we are absolutely intended to be in constant movement. We consume the word of God and grow together, but if we don’t ‘get out of bed’ every single day and ‘burn off what we consume’, the body of Christ WILL DIE.

In the ‘90’s there was an uprising of mega churches and revivals. The number of Christians around the world grew enormously and churches were beginning to explode. Into the next decade, churches were full, and it was a great thing to see so much salvation. Ministries were booming, biblical studies everywhere; growth was everywhere. Looking back at these last 10 years, something is happening. I’ve seen churches go down in number and people losing passion. Churches are more concerned about the building, and start getting into debt. They (we) are more concerned about ministries and capacitation, and are forgetting the sick and needy reality around us. What happened? I feel that God has been speaking to many of His people and it is time to get the body moving. We consumed, now we need to burn off. If we let the body sit, it will become useless. It’s time to give. It’s time to go. We need to stay true to the life of Christ, and take a deep look into what He did. How he lived ministry. He wasn’t part of a ministry. He was (and is) ministry. I encourage you to not be afraid of questioning things that seem natural to us now. As individuals, because of the blood of Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, our Father is constantly renewing our heart and soul, and we are under construction constantly. It is time for a revolution in the body of Christ. It is time for a revival of the church. It is time for the church to go under construction again, and it is time for the body to start running to those who are dead. DO NOT LET THE BODY OF CHRIST DIE.

Ephesians 1:18-23
18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you,
the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
